Scholarship Winners

2009 - 2010 Recipients
Amelia

Amelia Liarakos

Amelia Liarakos is a Class of 2009 graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia. During her four years of high school, Amelia has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. Amelia's academic achievements earned her an academic letter all four years as well as membership in the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, History Honor Society and the German Honor Society. In addition she won both first place and honorable mention in the Science Fair and won 3rd Place in web page development in the Future Business Leaders of America State competition. Outside of the classroom, Amelia's achievements continued on the volleyball court and the stage. She was a member of the freshman, junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams at Fairfax and has been either a lead, ensemble member or dancer in four theatre productions along with being a member of the dance team all four years. Amelia plans on a career in graphic design and will be focusing her studies at Virginia Tech in this area.

 

Bryan

Bryan Mattfeld

Bryan Mattfeld is a Class of 2009 graduate of Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Virginia. During his four years of high school, Bryan has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. Bryan's academic achievements have earned him membership in both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society along with a Scholar Athlete Award all four years, a National Merit Commended Student Award and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction Award. He placed three separate times in the science fair and took part in the American Math Competition. Bryan has also been very involved in athletics as a member of the varsity football team at Chantilly for four years, as a player and Captain in the Chantilly Basketball Recreational League, and as an assistant coach and referee in the Chantilly Basketball Recreational Youth League. Bryan has also served in various positions in student government at Chantilly and was a math tutor for over three years. Bryan plans on studying engineering at Virginia Tech.

 

Emma

Emma Schmitt

Emma Schmitt in a Class of 2009 graduate of Oakton High School in Oakton, Virginia. During her four years of high school, Emma has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. Emma's academic achievements have earned her membership in the National Honor Society, an Advanced Placement Scholar Award, Randolph Macon Book Award and a Youth Award of Excellence in Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Academics. Emma has been active in student government, serving as Vice President her senior year and as a member of the executive council for three years. In addition, Emma attended Girl's State of Virginia in 2008 and served as an intern in the office of U.S. Senator Tom Harkin. Emma has also been very involved in Girl Scouts of America earning both the Silver Trefoil Award and the Gold Award for her accomplishments. Emma plans on studying psychology and possibly minoring in political science while at Virginia Tech.

 

Frances

Frances Dowd

Frances (Frankie) Dowd is a Class of 2009 graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia. During her 4 years of high school, Frankie has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. While at Fairfax she served as Student Government Association President her senior year and her academic achievements earned her membership in both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society as well as a place on the honor roll all four years. Outside of the classroom Frankie's accomplishments continued both in the pool and on the track and cross country fields. She was a member of the varsity swim team, the cross country team - serving as captain her junior year, as well as the indoor and outdoor track teams. Her athletic achievements include First Team All Region 2007 Cross Country, All State 2007 Outdoor Track and the Coaches Award for Indoor Track in 2009. In addition, Frankie served as the Student Representative to the Parent Teacher Association at Fairfax High School and was an active member of the Girl Scouts earning the Girl Scouts Silver Award.

 

Phillip

Phil Pollman

Phillip (Phil) Pollman is a Class of 2009 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. During his four years of high school, Phil has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. Phil's academic achievements have earned him membership in both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society as well as an Academic Letter his junior year, an AP Scholar Award and well as placement on the Athletic Honor Roll during both his freshman and junior years. Phil placed three times at the Lake Braddock High School Science Fair and was a delegate to the Boy's State of Virginia in 2008. Outside of the classroom, Phil's accomplishments continued both as a member of the varsity swim team and the symphonic and marching bands all four years. Phil served as Captain of the swim team his senior year and earned three athletic letters and was a three time music letter winner. Phil has also been involved in the community as a reading tutor, swim coach and instructor, and as a lifeguard for the Fairfax County Park Authority. Phil plans on studying international relations or political science while at Virginia Tech.

 

Timothy

Tim Jarvis

Timothy (Tim) Jarvis is a Class of 2009 graduate of Bishop Dennis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. During his 4 years of high school, Tim has been involved in numerous activities both inside and outside of school. Tim's academic achievements have earned him membership in both the National Honor Society and the German National Honor Society. He was both the member and player on the junior varsity baseball team at O'Connell and served as a Math Tutor for his last two years. Tim has been a very active member of the Boy Scouts of America serving as Assistant Patrol Leader and earning the Scouts highest honor - that of Eagle Scout. In addition Tim has devoted countless hours of time as both a volunteer and staff member of the St. Michael Church in Annandale, Virginia. Tim plans on majoring in engineering at Virginia Tech.
