2010-2011 Scholarship Winners


Kelsey Dressing:

Kelsey Dressing is a Class of 2010 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia.  During her four years of high school, Kelsey has been involved with numerous activities both inside and outside of school.  While at Thomas Jefferson, she has been an active member of both the marching band and the winter drum line all four years, serving as Pit Section Captain her senior year as well as receiving numerous awards including Most Outstanding Student (06-07), Most Improved Winter Drum line (07), Most Outstanding Junior (08), Best Rank Award (07-08), Most Outstanding Percussionist and lettering all four years.  In addition to her significant involvement with the band and drum line, Kelsey has been a member of the Botball Robotics Team, American Sign Language Club, Key Club and is a National Merit Scholar.  Kelsey plans on a career in architecture and will be focusing her studies at Virginia Tech in this area.

Julia Katz:

Julia Katz is a Class of 2010 graduate of McLean High School in McLean, Virginia.  During her four years of high school, Julia has been involved with numerous activities both inside and outside of school.  While at McLean, she has been an active member in both theatre and the dance team, serving as either an actor, technician, and leader in numerous performances, including as lead choreographer of the play Grease and as President of the Drama Club/Thespian Society her senior year.  Julia’s academic achievements earned her a National Merit Commendation as well as membership in both the National and Latin Honor Societies, serving as President of the latter.  She has earned a gold medal all four years on the National Latin Exam and attended the Virginia Governor’s Latin Academy.  Julia’s achievements extend outside of McLean High School through her involvement in local theatre productions as well as through her role as a Cappie – a critic for local high school theatre productions,  from which several of her reviews have been featured in The Washington Post.  Julia plans on pursuing a degree in theatre and classics with the immediate plan of becoming a secondary school teacher and remaining involved in theatre.

Lydia Nguyen:

Lydia Nguyen is a Class of 2010 graduate of George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia.  During her four years of high school, Lydia has been involved with numerous activities both inside and outside of school.  Lydia’s academic achievements have earned her membership into both the National and Math Honor Societies as well as receiving an academic letter all fours years.  Lydia was a member of the swim team her freshman year and earned a varsity letter and has been a member of the yearbook staff, serving as co-editor her senior year.  Outside of her demanding academic and extracurricular schedule, Lydia has spent numerous hours volunteering at the Dunn Loring Animal Hospital and at Stenwood Elementary School.  Julia plans on majoring in biology at Virginia Tech and is considering studying veterinary medicine after she finishes her undergraduate studies.

Bennett Salmon:

Bennett Salmon is a Class of 2010 graduate of Centreville High School in Centreville, Virginia.  During his four years of high school, Bennett has been involved with numerous activities both inside and outside of school.  Bennett’s academic achievements have earned him membership into the National, Math, Science and Social Studies Honor Societies, an academic letter all four years, and an AP Scholar Award.  Bennett’s achievements also include placing either first or second in the Science Fair for Physics at either the school or regional level over three separate years.   In addition, Bennett has been a member of the Varsity Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track teams, a member of Model Judiciary as well as serving on the staff of the Sentinel Newmagazine where he served as co-editor-in-chief his senior year.  Bennett plans on studying engineering when he enters Virginia Tech in the fall.

Perrin Lieberman:

Perrin is the first ever winner of the NCR Chapter Graduate Student Scholarship provided to an outstanding graduate student studying at the Virginia Tech Northern Virginia Center.  Perrin is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Education with a focus in Counselor Education.  Perrin received her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Media Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.  Perrin has served in a teaching role in various capacities in the Tuckaway Child Development and Early Education Center and Richmond and in the Fairfax County School System – serving most recently as School Counseling Intern at J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia.  Perrin is affiliated with the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, the Virginia Counselors Association, the Virginia School Counselors Association, and the Restorative Justice Association.  Additionally, her academic achievements have earned her membership into Chi Sigma Iota, the international counseling academic and professional honor society.
